There are many ways a roof can show signs of leaking. The most obvious is water spots on your ceiling, but there are a few others you may experience. The top five signs of a roof leak: missing shingles; damaged or cracked shingles; damaged or missing flashing or boot covers to roof penetrations; water spots or wet roof decking seen in your attic; and water spots on your ceilings or walls.
What causes a roof leak? Once water gets into the attic it can travel along rafters and other horizontal surfaces, which makes pinpointing the exact entry point difficult. Missing flashing is a common culprit — you might assume the shingles are at fault when in fact flashing around the chimney or another less obvious penetration is letting water into the attic space.
Ice dams can also be to blame. Snow thaws over the warm portions of the roof and refreezes over a cold eave, backing water up under the shingles. Without an ice and water underlayment beneath your shingles, you could have leaks.
